Manipur is one of the state in northeastern India, with the city of Imphal as its capital. Manipur is sometimes refers alternative names such as Kangleipak or Sanaleibak.
The state covers an area of 22,327 square kilometres (8,621 sq mi) and has a population of almost 3 million, including the Meeteis, Kukis, Nagas, and Pangal peoples, who speak Sino-Tibetan languages.
Manipuri or Meetei lol is the state language who speaks among the 29 ethnics tribe ,however different ethnics tribe have also their own ethnics languages.
There are 29 dialects spoken in Manipur. The six main hill dialects recognised by Government of Manipur for the medium of instruction and examination up to class XII (12th grade) are:
- Mizo, dialect of the Mizo people
- Zou, dialect of the Zou people
- Poula, dialect of the Poumai Naga
- Thadou, dialect of Thadou people, the second language in the state after Meeteilon during the Colonial Period.
- Vaiphei, dialect of Vaiphei people
- Tangkhul, dialect of Tangkhul people
- Paite, dialect of Paite people
- Tedim Pau, dialect of Tedim people
- Hmar, dialect of Hmar people
- Mao, dialect of Mao people
- Lianglad, dialect of Liangmai Naga People
- Rongmei, dialect of Rongmei people
- Maring, dialect of Maring Naga/Maring, Maring Khoibu, Maring Narum-saibol people
- Maram, dialect of Maram Naga
- Gangte, dialect of Gangte people
- Uipo, dialect spoken by Khoibu people
- Monsang dialect spoken by Monsang
- Anal dialect spoken by Anal
- Chothe dialect spoken by Chothe
- Kom dialect spoken by Kom
- Lamkang dialect spoken by Lamkang
- Thangal dialect spoken by Thangal
Above mentions ethnics tribe are mostly settled on the hills. They are still in underdeveloped and GoM is still working on this to balance the developement between hills and valley.
